This animation is an excellent example of diffusion of gas atoms. To learn more about diffusion see Diffusion Details For clarity, one type of atom (colored red) are positioned randomly on the left side of the container and the other type (colored blue) are positioned randomly on the right side of the container. When the Start button is pushed these atoms take on their normal thermal velocities which causes the atoms on either side to be progressively more mixed. Of course, this diffusion is impeded by frequent collisions between both either opposite or the same species of atom. The diffusion rate is characterized by the average density of atoms and the sum of the radii of the atoms as well as the average speed of the atoms. These parameters are used in the Green and Brown Theory curves plotted from Diffusion Details which show the theoretical normalized density of the red and blue atoms. Also shown are histograms of the density of blue atoms on the left side and the density red atoms on the right side of the container. These histogram curves are expected to match approximately the Brown and Green theoretical curves. The learner may (within limits) use the Sliders below to change the following variables:
