2D Collisions With Graphics and Sound This animation shows 2D collisions of discs. The direction of the disc is shown by an arrow pointing along the direction of travel whose length is proportional to the momentum of the disc. The energy, E, is shown also. At the top of the screen, the total energy of all the discs is shown to be equal to the starting energy, E=5, of each disc times the number of discs. The learner may vary the disc radius and the number of discs within the limit that the fill factor, f, is less than 0.5. If f exceeds 0.5 then the maximum number and the number of particles is reduced to keep f less than 0.5. For this animation, it is a good idea to check the Single Step box so that that individual collisions can be seen one at a time. When the discs collide, a coil spring is shown between them indicating that a large impulse is given to both discs. A sound click is also given off.
